Breathe in and out for a second. I must tell you, this is not a yoga class but what you are about to read will give you tremendous relief and a good degree of calmness.

This relief is from the stress borne of difficult colleagues and negative atmosphere. Relax and enjoy the ride, my friend.

There’s this one colleague or perhaps two, three or maybe you aren’t sure how many of them there are who try to ruin your day and endanger your work and career. How do you handle them?

Before delving into the strategies of how to handle a difficult coworker at the workplace we must point out a few possible factors that are likely to make a coworker difficult.

They are nature, temperament, background, threat to their position in the workplace, your charisma, perspective etc.

Work may seem very stressful to some people, and they react badly to the stress. By understanding what inspires your colleague attitude,  you might be able to learn how to control their behavior.

Do you think some of your co-workers deliberately provoke you? Are you seeing yourself through their eyes? Do you get in the way of others?

After thinking and answering above all else, you can move on to the next step. It is not our intention to change to match them. However, some steps can be taken to improve the situation.

CHECK THROUGH THE LENS OF OTHERS

Are you the only one with the problem or is there someone else? Are your actions exaggerated and causing bad behavior in others? Talk to a trusted colleague and ask for feedback to review.

ACT LIKE A PRO.

Concentrate on the goals of your work and believe in yourself, the bad behavior of your colleague is nothing for you to worry about. Take his/her bad words lightly and try to ignore them as much as possible. Act like a pro.

Only at the professional level can you reduce contact with this person. Avoid unnecessary conversations and gossip and limit access. But you can work with everyone.

PROFESSORNALISM CALLS FOR DIALOGUE.

If the situation becomes irreversible, talk to another colleague in a private place till when you can calmly control your emotions.

Pay attention to the words or gestures you use to avoid escalating the conversation head-on as an attack and insult. Please make an effort to reasonably and fairly settle the issue.

Do not bring old problems to the surface, do not go beyond the glass, and focus on the specific problem. The goal is to gain a level ground.

THE BOSS MUST HEAR THIS.

If the situation does not improve after this discussion, please contact your manager. Find the right basis for defending yourself and your role in the situation.

Show that you really want to solve the problem positively and not aiming to get back at your colleague.
